The Annals of Dermatology published a paper addressing the improvement in the skin's barrier function by modulating keratinocytes, which are the building blocks of the epidermis which maintain moisture retention. Kinetin is a plant hormone, a nucleic acid derivative, N-Furfuryl adenine that regulates growth and cell differentiation. In the paper, the clinical efficacy of topical Kinetin cream was studied by evaluating skin moisture, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and skin surface roughness in patients who used kinetin-containing cream. The study assessed skin moisture and smoothness in subjects who used a Kinetin-containing cream twice daily for 4 weeks.

Skin aging results because its barrier function is disrupted, leading to a dry appearance. The skin's appearance appears dry and desiccated due to water loss. The inability of the skin to retain moisture leads to wrinkles. The widespread leaks in the skin's cellular matrix allow moisture to escape. Quercetin is a phytochemical (from plants) flavonoid,, normally found in food substances such as onions, berries, cocoa, apples, honey, red grapes, tea, and green, leafy vegetables. Its highest concentration is in onions, especially red onions. Current research is focused on the therapeutic potential as treatment and prevention of cardiovascular cancer, colorectal cancers, strokes, and neurodegenerative diseases.
The dihydrate form is the most bioavailable, and its oral absorption is enhanced when added to vitamin C and bromelain. In a topical form, the absorption is enhanced with phospholipids and D -limonene. Its topical effects include basophil and mast cell stabilizing and physically, blocking UV rays. It has been employed in reducing scar formation, especially keloid scars.
